Think about what your actions could do to someone else, good or bad

We often think with our own interests in mind. We say and do things that we deem appropriate for ourselves. Rarely do we think of the potential negatives that these actions can create for others.

It can be as simple as how you treat the person making your coffee in the morning. Imagine someone truly down on life, begrudging rolling out of bed in the morning, only to go to work and be treated with attitude and condescension purely because the coffee they made you didn’t fully meet your expectations in some way. Sure, you paid for the service, but is a $5 coffee worth belittling someone who may be on the verge of tears, living with nothing but despair, and desperately relying on a miracle to turn their life around?

What if you were in their shoes? What if you were at your lowest moment? Imagine the desperation you would feel for a little human compassion when it seems like the world is drowning you.

What if you just went through a breakup and your ex immediately bedded someone else or hit on one of your friends? That person would have displayed zero care or consideration for how mentally damaging their actions were to you. This is reality for someone almost daily. The things we do in our own selfish interests carry massive mental tolls for others. We should all be more aware of this. We should all be living with the intention of softening the harsh realities of others in some way.

This is why compassion is so big to me. We all have the ability to do right by others, we all have the ability to feel for others, we should be more actively aware of this when we do the things we do. You never know who’s barely keeping it together.
